Garden Plot or Flop?

Laura spent several hours, digging, hoeing, and gaining blisters as she cleared away the weeds to make the perfect spot for the garden.  Then, Laura and her good friend, Jodi Westenhofer, got the supplies from Lowes, and went to work building these beautiful garden plots - all on their own!  They felt very accomplished!  Next, Jodi watched the kids while Laura went trip after trip, filling up buckets of dirt and dumping them into those garden boxes...wow..that took a lot more dirt then they anticipated.  I think it took 8 trips with 8 5 gallons buckets full of dirt with EACH load.  Then, they added several bags of manure to finish it off. Let me just tell you, Laura was dirty, sweaty and stinky - but feeling so AMAZING when she was done.  That night she wanted to plant the garden - but it stormed, so it just had to wait a day or two...but it finally happened.  All the kids helped plant certain plants...we had zucchini, pumpkin, watermelon, squash, green beans, a pepper, and lima bean plants that we had all started from seed and that were healthy and ready to grow.  We also bought tomato, strawberry, and onion to add to the garden.  We were so excited to have our garden grow and get some yummy veggies!  Well....it looked amazing for a day-  after about 3 days, nearly everything was dead.....what????  Yep, our ambitious attempt at a garden was a flop.  Sad day.  We have hope that maybe the strawberries, onions, and maybe a pepper will come through - but that is all...everything else is a lost cause.  Try again next year - Clay thinks we needed better soil.....so we will work on that.
On the bright side, the front flowers and cactus garden is doing great and thriving!!! At least we can keep something alive and beautiful, even if it is cactus!
