Hiking the Lava Beds

Trevor and Leslie knew about a neat hiking spot in the old Lava beds/ old water reservoir reserve  not far from Shoshone.  So they invited us to go hiking with them and then after we got all hot and sweaty from hiking – we would then stop at the Shoshone pool and cool off!  Good plan!  The hike was neat.  The black rock was amazing and all the holes and crevasses that were created by air and water were interesting.  Among the rocks, Trevor and CJ found an interesting bone!  Had one sharp tooth up front and several small ones in the back.  Trevor let CJ keep it… and our “educated guess” is it is a bobcat bone.  CJ is very proud.  He even wrapped it up in toilet paper and brought it to church to show people (unknown to Mom and Dad, of course!)  Later, as we were hiking, Clay made an interesting point…he said, “We probably should be watching out for rattle snakes….”  Inspired man… within minutes we heard the rattle!  We gathered the kids quickly, as some were hiking ahead, and listened to find the exact spot of the predator.   Luckily, it was on top of the cavern somewhere and was just spooked by the sound of us (yes, we happen to be a noisy bunch!), but lucky for us we were warned about the snake close by!   Well, we didn’t stay in that particular spot long, and we kept a closer proximity to the kids as we hiked back!  When we made it back to the cars, we were all Hot, thirsty, sweaty, and ready for the pool!  Here we come!
